Sculptures by John Wright

I have had a varied work history in the police, finance and for the past seven years in the arts. Coming to sculpture in my mid life I have benefited from the experiences in my previous careers as well as my personal life, which includes a family.

I have long been skeptical of the main-stream, although I have existed and thrived in it. Many of my works relate directly to my domestic life and more recently my observation regarding my immediate social surroundings.

Studying at TAFE and The National Art School I have been taught in a studio based system by practicing artists. Their encouragement and access to these teachers professional and personal lives has been invaluable in understanding the commitment needed to "succeed" in this field.

The following images provide a record for the viewer and myself of the work so far. Currently I am working on installations using wood, plaster and found objects. Recently I have been avoiding steel constructions, which made up the majority of my work at art school. However I miss the formal language that those works employed.

I am concerned that my work, like much of "contemporary" art tends to be glib and ingenuine. With regard to sculpture, installations in particular, sacrifice formal qualities that I believe to be inherent in good works of art.

My goal is to continue exploring themes and materials and ultimately produce work that is both ideas driven and formally pleasing.
